A note on Riverhead: junior Michael Smith will be wearing No. 52 today instead of his regular No. 72. Apparently he left his jersey locked in the high school, so he needed to find a new jersey.
Introductions have just started here at Stony Brook University for the Division II Long Island championship. The crowd here thus far is heavily Riverhead based. It looks like Elmont fans don't travel very well so Riverhead should have the home field advantage.
The weather here is much better than last week's bitter cold. Walking up to the press box one guy compared it to a summer day. That's what it feels like compared to last Saturday. The warmer weather should help both offenses. I would imagine Miguel Maysonet won't carry 47 times today.
A quick note on the previous L.I. title games at Hofstra yesterday. Suffolk is 2-0 so far after Connetquot won Division I against Freeport and Sayville won Division III against Bethpage. Both were good games. Suffolk swept the title games last year and has now won the last six going into today. The last Nassau team to win was Roosevelt against Mount Sinai in Division IV in 2006. Lawrence also upset Bellport that year in D-II.
The National Anthem was just completed so we're waiting for coin toss.
The captains for Riverhead, Maysonet, Tyler Gilliam, Andrew Smith and Tim Velys are out for coin toss. Riverhead wins the toss and will receive at the south end zone.

The Blue Waves enter today's Class II Long Island Championship as the Suffolk County Champion, and that's been a good thing. Since the format was introduced in 1992, Suffolk is 11-5 in Class II.
Riverhead, however, lost its only previous bid for a Long Island title in 2003 with a 20-0 defeat at the hands of Garden CIty. Elmont has never played in a Long Island Championship.
The majority of those Suffolk wins, five to be exact, have been secured by Bellport High School, a perennial power. North Babylon has won four titles.
In all, 11 different teams have played in a Class II title game. Here's how they've fared:

Riverhead wins county championship
Pregame:
The Riverhead Blue Waves just took the field on a chilly afternoon at Stony Brook Univeristy. The Blue Waves, the undefeated top seed in Division II, are the home team against No. 2 West Islip. We're only minutes from the opening kick.
We have Sal Mignano doing the PA announcing here at Stony Brook. Mignano, of course, is the longtime baseball coach at Shoreham-Wading River.
He just began introductions, starting with West Islip.
This is the third game of the Suffolk County championship playoff games. Sayville (D-III) and Connetquot (D-I) have prevailed already with John Glenn to play Babylon (D-IV) after the Riverhead game. The theme in the first two games has been turnovers. Sayville survived its game despite six turnovers. The cold weather I'm sure had a factor in that, so we'll see if turnovers play a factor in this game. Riverhead hasn't turned the ball over in 11 quarters now. If that streak continues today, I don't see West Islip having a chance.
The National Anthem just finished. No F-18 flyovers. I guess they're saving that for the Long Island championship.
West Islip finally took the field and did so to a chorus of boos from the Riverhead fans.
Another quick note on the weather: winds are reported at 22 mph with gusts to 29 mph. So good luck passing!

Riverhead takes the field
The Blue Waves have just taken the field for warmups at a chilly LaValle Stadium. Temperature is 27 degrees, but with the wind it's estimated to be only 12 degrees on the field. Wind chill temperature is not expected to exceed 19 degrees during game time.
It should be interesting to see how the weather impacts the game. Every single Riverhead player's wearing long sleeves right now.
