Pregame:
The Riverhead Blue Waves just took the field on a chilly afternoon at Stony Brook Univeristy. The Blue Waves, the undefeated top seed in Division II, are the home team against No. 2 West Islip. We're only minutes from the opening kick.
We have Sal Mignano doing the PA announcing here at Stony Brook. Mignano, of course, is the longtime baseball coach at Shoreham-Wading River.
He just began introductions, starting with West Islip.
This is the third game of the Suffolk County championship playoff games. Sayville (D-III) and Connetquot (D-I) have prevailed already with John Glenn to play Babylon (D-IV) after the Riverhead game. The theme in the first two games has been turnovers. Sayville survived its game despite six turnovers. The cold weather I'm sure had a factor in that, so we'll see if turnovers play a factor in this game. Riverhead hasn't turned the ball over in 11 quarters now. If that streak continues today, I don't see West Islip having a chance.
The National Anthem just finished. No F-18 flyovers. I guess they're saving that for the Long Island championship.
West Islip finally took the field and did so to a chorus of boos from the Riverhead fans.
Another quick note on the weather: winds are reported at 22 mph with gusts to 29 mph. So good luck passing!
1st QUARTER:
Riverhead won the toss and deferred. West Islip will receive on the north end zone.
Travis Walker kicks off for Riverhead and it bounces out of bounds at about the seven yard line. West Islip will take over at its own 35.

1-10 at 35—Quarterback Scott Mattera scrambles right to the 42.
2-3 at 42—Mattera takes the snap left on a set run. He's just short of the first down.
3-inches at 44—Mattera in the shotgun, hands off to Nick Cestaro who just gets the first down.
1-10 at 46—Mattera in the shotgun again, handoff again to Cestaro and he's met right at the line.
2-9 at 47—Pass right to a wide open Tom Clifford for the first down. Mattera with plenty of time to throw on that one.
1-10 at 43 Riverhead— Shovel pass to Cestaro goes for about a yard.
2-8 at 41—Cestaro on an option right is met right away by Robert Hale for a loss of one.
3-9 at 42—Mattera in the shot gun, had all day to throw, finally threw to an open Ian Braddish who couldn't make the play on the left sideline. The ball was nearly intercepted on a deflection.
4-9 at 42—Eddie Ryan punts to Rasheen Moore who is immediately met at the 16 yard line.

1-10 at 16—Here we go, Miguel Maysonet bursts down the right sideline, across midfield and into West Islip territory. A 37-yard gain.
1-10 at 47 West Islip—Maysonet again, a shifty run to the 39.
2-2 at 39—Maysonet picks up the first down to the 35.

2-9 at 24—Maysonet on a toss left, for the first time, takes a hard hit from Dan Malone.

4-4 at 19—Velys fumbled and West Islip recovers, although it was short of the first down either way. Riverhead turns it over, Tim Lettieri recovers.

2-14 at 16—Mattera on an option right has nowhere to go. Andrew Smith in on the tackle.
3-12 at 18—Pass Incomplete. Smith came on a blitz from the right side and forced Mattera into a quick throw, which fell incomplete. West Islip must punt.
